The University of Rochester Clinical and Translational Science Institute is one of 46 institutions nationwide with funding from the National Institutes of Health to lead the emerging field of clinical and translational research. The Institute is building the foundation to assist researchers at the UR and across Upstate New York to produce innovative technology and methods that more efficiently and more quickly advance treatments to patients.

“Our development of a translational research program dates back to 1998 or earlier with the creation of training programs to grow this new generation of translational researchers, “said Thomas Pearson, M.D., M.P.H., Ph.D., Senior Associate Dean of Clinical Research at the School of Medicine since 2002 and Principal Investigator for the NIH project. “We share a common vision with NIH that there should be an academic home for transitional research. Our institute is the next logical step in this area of investigation. We have been pleased to be one of the very first institutions funded to develop a transitional research program.”

“The University of Rochester and the School of Medicine increasingly will be known as one of the places for conducting translational research and for training successful academic researchers,” said Pearson, who is Director of the Institute.

The goals of the CTSI include: expanded pilot projects for faculty and trainees; enhanced services for data management, computer simulation, biostatistics, epidemiology, research ethics; involvement in research by healthcare providers and members of the Rochester community; new Master’s and Doctoral degree programs and faculty development programs in clinical and translational science; and the formation of a network of hospitals and biomedical research institutions in Upstate New York whose members will collaborate on projects and share resources.
