Couples HIV Intervention Randomized Controlled Trial
(R01 DA15641 NIH/NIDA)
McMahon (Principal Investigator)
Clinical trial to evaluate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of two enhanced couples-based HIV counseling and testing interventions against the NIDA standard intervention. The target population consists of crack, cocaine and heroin-using women and their primary heterosexual partners, recruited from Harlem and the South Bronx in New York City.
Hepatitis C Virus Intranasal Transmission: Pilot Study
(R21 DA19834 NIH/NIDA)
McMahon (Principal Investigator)
This multi-disciplinary study will develop new technologies and collect preliminary data to explore the virological, clinical and behavior factors that might facilitate hepatitis C virus (HCV) transmission through an intranasal route among noninjecting drug users.
Barriers to Treatment-based HIV Prevention for IDU Couples
(R21 DA22960 NIH/NIDA)
McMahon (Co-Investigator); J. Simmons (PI)
Injection drug users whose primary sexual partners also inject (partnered IDUs) have limited success in reducing HIV risk behavior and accessing or completing drug treatment programs. The proposed qualitative study will explore the interpersonal and structural barriers to drug treatment and treatment-mediated HIV prevention among heterosexual partnered IDUs.
Diffusion of HIV-1 in Male Sex Work Venues in SE Asia
(R01 DA22170 NIH/NIDA)
McMahon (Co-Investigator); M. Clatts (PI)
This study applies a mixed method, ethno-epidemiological approach to the study of drug and sexual risk among young male sex workers Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, with the goal of modeling the impact that male sex work has on diffusion of STD’s, HIV-1, and multiply-resistant HIV-1 in Vietnam.
