Multidisciplinary Pilot Awards
To support new multidisciplinary HIV/AIDS research collaborations.
Applications are especially encouraged in the folllowing interdisciplinary areas: (A) optics and nanomedicine, (B) prevention/behavioral research, (C) mathematical and computational modeling, and (D) international collaborations with UR DCFAR collaborators in South Africa. Investigator-initiated proposals in other inter-disciplinary areas will also be considered. Priority will be given to projects with strong potential for extramural funding, as well as applications from junior faculty and to faculty who do not presently work on HIV/AIDS.
New cross-disciplinary HIV/AIDS research collaborations are defined as studies that involve at least one DCFAR faculty member plus a researcher not currently working on HIV/AIDS. For international collaborations, studies will involve at least one UR DCFAR faculty member plus at least one South African investigator.
Funding
Projects will generally be funded for one year, for a maximum of $20,000; renewal for a second year will be possible if justified by the type of project and level of impact. In most cases, funds are restricted to research expenses and cannot be used to support travel, faculty salary, or equipment purchases. At least 2 awards are available. If selected for a full application, it is expected that applicants will request matching funds from their primary department or center.
Enabling Pilot Awards
To support the generation of enabling preliminary data for new grant application.
Applications are especially encouraged in support of new NIH grant applications that have already received initial extramural review and require additional preliminary data to address reviewer critiques. Priority will be given to projects with high impact and strong potential for extramural funding, as well as to junior faculty.
Funding
See above. At least 2 awards are available.
Special Deadlines
Enabling pilot award applications will be considered three times per year, on July 31, November 30, or March 31.
Traveling Fellowship Awards
To support international collaborators with South Africa. Applicants may include faculty members or trainees/students.
The major goal of these awards will be to stimulate international research collaborations with South Africa. Projects that request support for Rochester-based research using international datasets will be strongly considered, as will requests for short-term travel to South Africa to perform specific research work.
Funding
Proposals may request up to $10,000; renewals will not be considered. Funds may be allocated to research expenses as well as to student stipends or travel. At least 3 awards are available.
