Research Collaboration
The UR D-CFAR will establish research collaborations with two international partners, at the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Cape Town in South Africa. Our strategic planning efforts for this D-CFAR identified a great need for advanced statistical analysis support and training of local biostatisticians at both South African sites. Importantly, both sites have also conducted many HIV/AIDS studies that include 1) clinical studies on antiretroviral drugs; 2) vaccine trials; 3) HIV mother-to-child transmission studies; 4) HIV epidemiological and observational studies; and 5) prevention/behavioral studies. This has resulted in the generation of large amounts of data, much of which remains either unanalyzed or incompletely analyzed – creating a very fertile area for establishment of mutually beneficial collaborations.
Collaborative Clinical Data Analysis
We will also provide a forum to allow UR trainees in public health and epidemiology to work with datasets and research materials from our partners in South Africa. This will be achieved by making South African datasets available to Ph.D. and M.P.H. trainees at the UR, which will then be used as the basis for Ph.D. and M.P.H. thesis research projects. Students performing such work will be comentored by D-CFAR faculty, in conjunction with faculty in the Dept. of Community and Preventive Medicine and the Epidemiology Ph.D. program.
