Advanced Education in General Dentistry
Program Director:Hans
Malmström, D.D.S.
Assistant Program Director: Michael Yunker, DDS
The University of Rochester Eastman Department
of Dentistry (EDD) offers a one- and two-year advanced education
in General Dentistry Program and Advanced Education in General Dentistry
(AEGD) Program. These programs are approved by the Commission on
Dental Accreditation and after completion the participants receive
a certificate. For those who are enrolled in the two-year program
and who have an interest to enter a career involving teaching or
research, this program can be integrated with research training.
The research program at the University of Rochester includes a master
of science (major in dental science) and master of public health
degree program. The Ph.D. program is in one of the basic biomedical
sciences. Fellowships supported by the National Institute of Dental
Research are available to those who plan a career primarily in research
and teaching.
Didactic Courses and Lectures
The didactic curriculum for both the one- and two-year dental residency
programs consist of both required and elective course work.
As mentioned in the Introduction, non-excused absence from required
lectures and seminars will be considered vacation time.

Clinical Activities
Patient management and clinical activities are major components
in both the one- and two-year programs. Residents provide comprehensive
care to all assigned patients. The residents carry out treatment
plans and case management with consultations under the guidance
of the broad AEGD faculty including: specialists in orthodontics
and oral surgery, periodontology, prosthodontic, endodontics, oral
pathology, and general dentistry. Residents receive clinical training
in areas of removable and fixed prosthodontics, periodontics, operative
dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, endodontics, pediatric dentistry,
dental implantology, orthodontics, and research. Residents enrolled
in the two-year program are required to develop and complete a research
project. They present the research protocol and results at a seminar
involving resident and faculty participation. This is considered
a very important part of the program because it aides in developing
the critical scientific thought process. It is expected that this
skill will be utilized in the case management of patients. Residents
in the two-year program have the opportunity to select the research
topic and will be assisted by the research faculty to select the
appropriate mentor and research facilitator. The research component
is well structured. It affords residents with minimal experience
in research the ability to develop and complete projects. Areas
available for resident research include most basic science subjects
and clinical investigation of dental materials, prosthodontics,
oral surgery, operative dentistry, radiology, cariology, periodontology
and orthodontics. Facilities for clinical and basic science research
are available to all residents.

Second Year: $46,205
Graduate Degree Programs
Programs leading to either an M.S. or Ph.D. degree are usually integrated
with one of the clinical training programs, although they may also
be taken separately. The master of science program, with a major
in dental science, requires 30 credit hours of course work and research,
and the submission of a suitable thesis reporting on the results
of an original investigation. Program requirements include one or
more basic science graduate courses in subjects relevant to the
proposed research, courses in appropriate areas of dental science,
and participation in dental research seminars. The doctor of philosophy
degree program can be pursued independently at the University of
Rochester or in a combined program with advanced training in a clinical
dental specialty. The latter program is designed to train clinician
scientists for an academic and research career. The Ph.D. degree
can be received in the university departments of anatomy, biochemistry,
biology, microbiology and immunology, genetics, pharmacology, physiology,
or radiation biology. A National Research Service Award from the
National Institute of Dental Research provides stipends to U.S.
citizens or permanent residents who are in the combined specialty/Ph.D.
degree program.
