The Salivary Dysfunction Center
The Salivary Dysfunction Center is a combined program of the University
of Rochester Medical Center Eastman Department of Dentistry and
Eastman Dental Center. Dentists with a special interest in treating
salivary
dysfunction are involved in treating patients. The Center is a active
in the three areas of the department's mission: research, education
and clinical service.
Research
Various research projects have been and are currently being investigated
through the Salivary Dysfunction Center, primarily through the efforts
of Dr. Cyril Meyerowitz
and Dr. Gene Watson. Past projects
have included the use of slow release fluoride devices and using
a radioprotectant to reduce the effects therapeutic radiation on
the salivary glands.
Treatment Process
When a patient is seen at the Salivary Dysfunction Center the first step is a comprehensive work-up including history taking, extra and intra-oral examination, specific examination of the salivary glands and salivary sampling.
The dentist will then perform a salivary sampling including whole saliva sampling, parotid stimulated and unstimulated sampling and submandibular stimulated and unstimulated sampling.
The dentist will develop a diagnosis and treatment plan for the patients.
There may also be special diagnostic tests used in the treatment of these patients including blood chemistry, immunological profiles, technetium scans, and other salivary imaging techniques.
The dentist will recommend a treatment including special attention to diet, caries control, the use of saliva substitutes and systemic therapy.
