Dr. Basil G. Bibby ~ The Early Years |
The work in Dentistry at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) has and continues to touch many lives. It changes some, saves others, and provides many with hope for the future.
By making a “planned gift”—whether it be through a charitable provision in your will, a gift annuity or another vehicle—you can honor and promote this work in a significant way. To recognize donors who make such planned gifts, we are proud to announce the founding of the Basil G. Bibby Society.
The Basil Bibby Society is open to all who provide for Dentistry at the URMC in their estate plans, fund a life income gift or other partial interest arrangement. To help you in your planning, the University offers these options:
- Bequest – Gifts by will may be for a specific amount, which designates what and how much you want to bequeath, or a percentage of your estate, i.e., “I bequeath to the University of Rochester, an educational institution in Rochester, New York, for the benefit of Eastman Dental Center or Eastman Department of Dentistry or Center for Oral Biology, 5% of my (total) residual estate.”
- Testamentary Trust – All or part of your estate is left in trust with income going to one or more heirs. Upon their deaths, the trust corpus comes to the School.
- Gift Annuity – In exchange for a gift of cash or securities, the University will pay you a guaranteed fixed income for your life and/or that of another beneficiary. A portion of this income (is) may be tax-free.
- Other Life Income Gifts – Through a gift to the University of Rochester Pooled Income Fund, or a charitable remainder trust, you and/or another beneficiary can receive income for life.
- Gift of Real Estate with Life Tenancy – You can make a gift of real property to the University while retaining a “life estate” in the property, enjoying the right to continue to use it for life.
A planned gift can help Dentistry at URMC continue it’s vital mission—expanding and improving educational programs, patient care and important research efforts.

Dr. Basil G. Bibby and His Legacy
Born and raised in New Zealand, where the condition of teeth was said to be the worst in the world, Dr. Bibby developed a strong interest in discovering the cause(s) of tooth deterioration and in finding ways to prevent or reduce its prevalence.
He came to Rochester in 1930 because of the opportunity afforded him through a fellowship funded by the Rockefeller Foundation and offered by the University of Rochester. The research activities that began with the Rockefeller Fellowship have evolved into what is now the Eastman Department of Dentistry and the Center for Oral Biology.
From 1940-1947, Dr. Bibby served as Dean of Tufts University Dental School in Boston and returned to Rochester in 1947 to become director of Eastman Dental Center—then an independent institution and a clinic devoted to the care of children’s teeth. Under Dr. Bibby’s direction, the Center was transformed into a world-renowned dental research institute. Graduate programs in Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, Periodontology, Prosthodontics, and General Dentistry were developed and gained international reputations. Eastman Dental Center was founded through gifts and bequests by Mr. George Eastman and has since become an integral part of Dentistry at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC).
Dr. Bibby’s commitment to the future of dental education and his emphasis on research are the founding principles behind the Basil Bibby Society. We invite you to become a member of the Bibby Society by making a gift as outlined above to Dentistry at the URMC and helping our researchers and clinicians continue their progress.
