THE MEDICALLY COMPROMISED CHILD
Mandatory - first and second year residents
Fall and Spring, yearly, 1 hour/week
Dr. Robert J. Berkowitz and members of the UR Department of Pediatrics and EDD Division of Pediatric Dentistry
Objectives: To review medical problems affecting children and adolescents and their implications to dental management.

JOURNAL CLUB
Mandatory - first and second year residents
Fall and Spring, yearly, 1 hour/week
Dr. Robert J. Berkowitz
Objectives: To critically review recently published literature relevant to pediatric dentistry.

CASE PRESENTATION SEMINAR
Mandatory - first and second year residents
Fall and Spring, yearly, 1 hour/week
Dr. David Levy
Objectives: For residents to present cases which emphasize complex medical and/or social histories and require special consideration when formulating dental treatment plans. Discussions involve active participation of all residents and faculty.

PEDIATRIC BOARD LITERATURE REVIEW
Mandatory - second year residents
Fall and Spring, yearly, 1 hour/week

Objectives: To review the bibliography that forms the basis of the qualifying exam for certification by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

ORTHODONTICS RECORDS AND DIAGNOSIS
Mandatory - first and second year residents
Fall and Spring, 21 hours
Dr. Aliakbar Bahreman
Objectives: To study case and patient exercises. Subjects include: clinical examination; cephalometric tracing and interpretation; photography; and orthodontic model trimming and interpretation.

GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
Mandatory - first and second year residents
Fall and Spring, 38 hours
Dr. Aliakbar Bahreman
Objectives: To review the bibliography that forms the basis of the qualifying exam for certification by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry is reviewed. On odd years, all residents attend the Craniofacial Growth and Development course [ORB 558].

BIOMECHANICS AND APPLIANCES
Mandatory - first and second year residents
Fall and Spring, 21 hours
Dr. Aliakbar Bahreman
Objectives: To discuss the following topics: basic biomechanical principles; orthodontic wire properties; bone physiology; appliance manufacture, indications and contraindications; and bracket systems. The course format is seminar and laboratory based.

ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT PLANNING AND CASE MANAGEMENT
Mandatory - first and second year residents
Spring, 8 hours
Dr. Aliakbar Bahreman
Objectives: To interpret the various aspects of orthodontic case management in light of each resident's experience.

PEDIATRIC PHYSICAL DIAGNOSIS
Mandatory - first year residents
Spring, yearly, 10 hours
Dr. Robert J. Berkowitz
Objectives: To demonstrate and supervise examination of patients. Course is a tutorial given by the Pediatric Chief Resident at Strong Memorial Hospital.

ANESTHESIA ROTATION
Mandatory - first year residents
Spring, yearly
Department of Anesthesia
Objectives: To serve a one month rotation on the Anesthesia Service at Strong Memorial Hospital.

PEDIATRIC CLERKSHIP
Mandatory - first year residents
Spring, yearly
Department of Pediatrics
Objectives: To serve a six-week rotation on the Pediatric Service at Strong Memorial Hospital.

EMERGENCY MEDICINE ROTATION
Mandatory - second year residents
Summer, yearly
Department of Emergency Medicine
Objectives: To serve a two week rotation on the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Service at Strong Memorial Hospital.

RESEARCH PROJECT
Mandatory - second year residents
Spring and Fall, 1 day/week
Advisor: EDD or UR faculty member as appropriate
Objectives: To complete a research project as a requirement in partial fulfillment of program certification.
