PROSTHODONTIC SEMINAR SERIES I-IV
Mandatory - first year residents

Objectives: To review the prosthodontic literature, including
the most recent as well as classical literature. Dental residents
provide an update to the bibliography and prepare a seminar to cover
selected topics in fixed, removable, implant prosthodontics, maxillofacial
prosthodontics, and temporomandibular dysfunction.
INTRODUCTION TO DENTAL IMPLANTS
Mandatory - first year residents

Objectives: To provide an overview of dental implants;
to present a basic understanding of the biological principles of
osseointegration, diagnostic radiology along with surgical and prosthetic
procedures for endosseous implants; and to discuss blade and subperiosteal
implants.
IMPLANT SEMINAR LITERATURE REVIEW
Mandatory - second and third year residents
Fall and Spring, yearly
Drs.Paul Romano and Sean Meitner
This seminar will concentrate on more recent literature as it relates
to endosseous dental implants. Surgical and prosthetic aspects will
be reviewed by residents and discussed by faculty. Surgical literature
will include anatomy, histology, diagnosis, physiology, microbiology,
types of implants, and longitudinal studies. Prosthetic literature
will include diagnosis, treatment planning, biomechanical and technical
considerations, prosthetic treatment of the edentulous and partially
edentulous jaws as well as maxillofacial considerations and complications.
JOURNAL REVIEW SEMINAR

Prosthodontic Faculty
Objectives: To review the most recent literature from
several prosthodontic journals. Residents and faculty will discuss
and evaluate the literature in order to determine its relevancy
to clinical practice and appropriateness for laboratory and clinical
research design.
CASE PRESENTATION CONFERENCE
Mandatory - first, second, and third year residents

Objectives: For residents and faculty to present patients
treatment plans; review those patients currently under treatment
or whose treatment has been completed; and, illustrate relative
aspects of care through radiographs, slide and/or diagnostic and
treatment casts. The patients may illustrate any aspect of prosthodontic
therapy as well as clinical materials and techniques.
PROSTHODONTIC CLINICAL AND LABORATORY TECHNIQUE
Mandatory - first year residents
Summer, yearly
Drs.Carlo Ercoli, Gerald N. Graser and James L. Soltys
Objectives: To provide residents with the fundamentals
of clinical and laboratory procedures and give them a common background
from which to proceed before patient treatment. Clinical procedures
will be simulated. Faculty will discuss dental laboratory procedures
for complete and partially (fixed and removable) edentulous situations.
PROSTHODONTIC VISITING FACULTY SEMINAR SERIES
Mandatory - first year residents

Objectives: For visiting faculty to present lectures on
advanced topics relating to fixed, removable, maxillofacial, and
implant prosthodontics.
DENTAL MATERIALS SERIES
Mandatory - first year residents

Dr. Charles M. Oster
Objectives: To give residents a working background of
dental materials used both in the clinical and laboratory setting.
OCCLUSION SEMINAR
Mandatory - first year residents
Fall, yearly
Dr. James L. Soltys
Objectives: To provide the residents with a thorough background
on the history of occlusal concepts, different types of articulators,
occlusal schemes, and application of principles necessary in dental
reconstruction. Residents learn through lectures, laboratory exercises,
and hands-on clinical demonstrations.
RESEARCH PROJECT
Mandatory - first, second, and third year residents

Prosthodontic Faculty
Objectives: For each resident to develop a research project.
The project is dependent upon the individuals involvement in an
advanced degree program or not. Finished project results will be
written and possibly submitted for publication.
PROSTHODONTICS CLINIC
Mandatory - first, second, and third year residents

Prosthodontic Faculty
Objectives: To provide comprehensive prosthodontic care
within the clinic. The degree of difficulty of the treatment is
coordinated with the resident training level. Treatment is overseen
by faculty from diagnosis and treatment planning to the delivery
of the prosthesis. Interaction with the patients physician, general
dentist and other dental and medical specialties is emphasized as
indicated for each situation.
TREATMENT PLANNING CONFERENCE

To review patient clinical conditions and discuss treatment plans.
To select the most appropriate treatment based on evidence-based
available information. To provide a forum for discussion among residents
and faculty for the purpose of evaluating indications and contraindications,
advantages and disadvantages of specific treatment modalities.
DENTAL IMPLANT SEMINARS

To review the surgical and prosthodontic literature regarding dental
implant treatment. This is an opportunity for the prosthodontic,
periodontics and oral and maxillofacial surgery residents to provide
an in-depth review and presentation of the available literature
on several surgical and prosthodontic topics related to implant
dentistry.
DENTAL IMPLANTS FACULTY SEMINARS
Mandatory - all residents
Fall and Spring, every other year (alternating with the above mentioned
course)

Prosthodontic, periodontics and oral and maxillofacial surgery
faculty present seminars on selected topics and clinical cases related
to implant dentistry.
PROSTHODONTIC-PERIODONTICS LITERATURE REVIEW CONFERENCE
Mandatory - all residents

To review relevant literature on common topics of intereest between
periodontics and prosthodontics. Residents from both areas work
together to review and present the current literature.
PROSTHODONTIC-PERIODONTICS CASE PRESENTATION CONFERENCE

Senior prosthodontic and periodontics residents present clinical
casees which have been jointly treated by the two residents. Duscussion
of the case from a technical and management standpoint is provided.
IMPLANT TREATMENT PLANNING CONFERENCES

Drs. Carlo Ercoli, Paul Romano and Sean W. Meitner
Current implant cases that are to be treated in the periodontics
and prosthodontic clinics are reviewed and discussed. Treatment
rationale, indications and contraindication are also reviewed and
discussed among faculty and residents.
