Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Didactic Courses and Lectures
The program provides a combination of formal courses and conferences to provide in depth education for graduate students in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Lectures are provided by faculty and guest lecturers at a level above pre-doctoral.

Formal Courses include:

  1. Physical Diagnosis
  2. Survey in Anesthesia and Pharmacology
  3. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Core
  4. Surgical Anatomy
  5. Head and Neck Conference
  6. Practice Management
  7. Selected audit of Graduate Core Program
  8. ATLS
  9. ACLS

Additional education in physiology, microbiology, biochemistry, blood borne pathogen and infection control, risk management, pathology, craniofacial development and trauma are provided with the seminar and conference program. Further didactic and clinical education is provided by attendance at regional and national meetings and periodic non-institutional educational conferences.

Clinical Activities
Residents provide comprehensive care to all assigned patients. Residents carry out treatment plans and case management with consultations under the guidance of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery faculty. Clinical experience includes dental implants and full-mouth reconstruction, Dentoalveolar surgery, autogeneous bone graft, sinus lift, pathology, Dentofacial deformities, conscious and deep sedation for surgical procedures, soft tissue procedures, and apicalectomy procedures.

Operating Room Activities
OR procedures include orthognathic surgery, facial trauma and reconstructive surgery including bone harvesting and bone grafting, TMJ surgery.

Required Rotations:

  • Anesthesia - 4-month rotation
  • Medicine - 2-month rotation
  • Emergency Medicine- 1-month rotation
  • General Surgery - 2-month rotation
  • Plastic Surgery - 1-month rotation
  • Otolaryngology - 1-month rotation
  • Surgical Intensive Care Unit - 1-month
  • Pathology Service - 1-month rotation.

Elective Rotations:

  • Clinical Laboratory Service- 1-month rotation
  • Radiology- 1-month rotation

The OMFS resident, when assigned to another service, fully participates in all aspects of that service including on-call responsibilities, conference attendance, participation in teaching rounds and any other activity that is required of the residents of each respective service.

Program Stipend
All Advanced Specialty Education in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residents receive an annual stipend of $43,452 in the first year.

Applying to the Program
Applicants from countries other than the United States and Canada will be considered for admission to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program if they have completed the Advanced Education in General Dentistry or the General Practice Program and are eligible for licensure in New York State. They should have an outstanding academic record.
