EDD 701 RESEARCH DESIGN AND ANALYSIS

Objectives: This course is an introduction to the research process. It is an entry level, introductory course, for students without previous research training or research experience. Emphasis is on the principles of study design, statistical concepts, preparing a formal research proposal, and reporting of study results.
EDD 702 SPECIAL CARE I – MEDICAL/DENTAL INTERRELATIONSHIPS

Objectives: to increase residents’ understanding of diagnosis
and dental treatment planning for patients who have medical problems;
to review current concepts of diagnosis and treatment of common
medical problems that the dentist may encounter; and, to review
specific and clinical cases where medical problems influence dental
treatment.
EDD 703 SPECIAL CARE II – GERIATRIC DENTISTRY
Credit - one hour

Objectives: To present theoretical and practical aspects of dental
care for older patients. Issues covered: the biology of aging, medical,
and physical problems common in old age, behavioral/psychological
problems, and nutritional issues; clinical geriatric dental care
in the traditional specialty areas of prosthodontics, restorative
dentistry, periodontics, oral surgery, endodontics, and oral pathology;
and, ethics and dental pharmacology for older adults. Course material
is presented in a lecture/discussion format by local experts in
each of the topic areas.
EDD 704 SPECIAL CARE III – DENTISTRY FOR THE DEVELOPMENTALLY
DISABLED PATIENT

Objectives: To increase residents’ understanding of diagnosis
and dental treatment planning for patients who have developmental
disabilities; to review current concepts of diagnosis and treatment
of developmental disabilities that the dentist may encounter; and,
to review specific clinical cases where medical problems influence
dental treatment.
EDD 705 INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN

Objectives: To provide an overview of the instructional design process
as it relates to classroom teaching, presentations at conferences,
and patient teaching in the dental profession. Sessions will include
information on design development and evaluation.
EDD 708 TEMPOROMANDIBULR JOINT SPLINT TREATMENT

Objectives: To explain the theories and rationale for splint treatment.
The course will be divided in didactic and clinical sessions in
order to provide some of the necessary skills needed to understand
the rationale, outcome and complications of different splint treatment.
EDD 709 SCIENTIFIC BASIS FOR SAFE DENTAL PRACTICE
Credit – one hour

Objectives: To address the hazards posed by radiation, mercury,
infection, nitrous oxide, fluoride, stress and other potential hazards
during the delivery of care. Emphasis will be placed on the scientific
basis of the hazards and means to reduce the potential harm.
EDD 710 TEMPOROMANDIBULR JOINT DISORDERS

Objectives: To provide some of the necessary skills needed to understand
the disease process and appropriate treatment alternatives for patients
presenting with facial pain. The diagnosis and management of patients
with facial pain requires a multidisciplinary approach. The scope
of this series will be partially didactic and partially clinical.
EDD 711 HEAD AND NECK ANATOMY
Credit – one hour

Objectives: To review the gross anatomy of the head and neck. Lecture
material will include gross and cross-sectional anatomy, standard
and sectional (CT and MRI) radiographic images, common developmental
anomalies and patient oriented problems. Demonstrations of gross
and radiologic anatomy will supplement the lectures. All lectures,
cases, and laboratory demonstrations will cover material pertinent
to dental medicine.
EDD 712 ADVANCED ORAL PATHOLOGY
Credit – one hour

Objectives: To provide the residents with a current understanding
of pathologic conditions and abnormalities that affect the head
and neck region. Emphasis will be placed on diagnostic method and
development of the differential diagnosis. Clinics-pathologic correlation
(CPC) will be used to reinforce the process of transforming available
and obtainable information about the patient and suspected pathology
into a working diagnosis. Patient management and the indications
for referral will also be presented.
EDD 713 RESEARCH DESIGN (Combined with EDD 701 –
Research Design and Biostatistics)
EDD 716 PRACTICE MANAGEMENT
Credit - one hour

Dr. Eugene Surasky
Objectives: To provide information and material about all
aspects of managing and running a dental practice. Guest lectures
will include experts in the field of law, financial planning, dealing
with staff, banking, accounting, computers, equipment and practice.
