Training Grants
Rochester Training Program for Oral Health Clinical Research
The Rochester Training Program for Oral Health Clinical Research is designed
especially for dentists with a D.D.S. or D.M.D. degree who have completed
residency training in postdoctoral general dentistry or a clinical specialty;
or junior and mid-career dental faculty who wish to retrain as clinical
researchers.
Purpose
The Rochester Training Program for Oral Health Clinical Research is
designed to provide dentists with theoretical, methodological, and practical
training in clinical research to prepare them for careers in academic
dentistry.
The program emphasizes the fundamental aspects of oral and dental biology,
oral microbiology, salivary research, and craniofacial development. A strong
feature of the program is the interdisciplinary collaborative nature of
the training environment designed to encourage interaction among the dental
trainees and the strong cadre of biomedical and social scientists.
Two-Track Training Approach
Training opportunities will be structured around two tracks: an oral
biology track leading to an M.S. degree and a clinical
epidemiology track leading to an M.P.H. degree in clinical investigation. The curriculum
in each track is designed to complement and enhance, but not replace;
the mentored research experience focused on craniofacial dental and oral
health and disease.
All trainees will participate in the core of skill building workshops
in clinical research. In addition, the program will ensure that the trainees
will be conversant with the design, budgeting, implementation, data management,
and statistical methodology of controlled, dental, oral, and craniofacial
clinical trials.

THE UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER SCHOOL OF MEDICINE AND DENTISTRY
The University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry has a long
history and significant commitment to train dental academics and researchers.
In addition, the University hospitals and Eastman Dental Center have
awarded clinical residency, specialty, and postdoctoral general dentistry
certificates to more than 800 dentists over the past 40 years.
IN 1920......The University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry
is founded.
It is one of the first medical and dental centers in the country to house
both the school and hospital in a single building and established the tradition
of interdepartmental collaboration of clinical and basic scientists.
IN 1950......A dental research fellowship program is developed.
This is one of the first postgraduate program for dentists in America.
SINCE THEN......Over 100 MS and 50 Ph.D. degrees have been awarded to
dentists at this institution.
Many of these individuals have remained in academic dentistry. There are
few schools of dentistry in the United States that do not have at least
one Rochester graduate among their faculty.
TODAY......There are currently over 40 National Institutes of Health training-grant-sponsored
dental programs in the School of Medicine and Dentistry.
