OVERVIEW

Dr. J. Daniel Subtelny is widely regarded as one of the world's foremost educators in orthodontics. He was the CO-recipient of the 1993 Louise Ada Jarabek Memorial International Orthodontic Teachers and Research Award. Dr. Subtelny was CO-recipient of the 1996 Albert H. Ketcham Memorial Award, the highest honor presented by the American Board of Orthodontics.

"Dr. Albert H. Ketcham made significant contributions to the science of orthodontics. To commemorate his achievements and to serve as an inspiration to the advancement of orthodontics, the Albert H. Ketcham Memorial Award was established in 1936 by the American Board of Orthodontics in collaboration with the American Association of Orthodontists. The award is given annually to an orthodontist or other individual who has made a notable contribution to the science and art of orthodontics."

Since becoming director of the Eastman Dental Center Orthodontic Program in 1955, Dr. Subtelny has been instrumental in training more than 230 alumni. Today many of these former students are in leadership positions around the world. He has supervised over 20 master's theses, published over 60 papers, and authored a book "Early Orthodontic Treatment" published by Quintessence 2000.

At the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he received his Certificate of Orthodontics and Masters of Science degree, Dr. Subtelny was one of the early members of the internationally recognized multi-disciplinary cleft palate team. He is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists (since 1980) and also of the American College of Dentists (since 1986).

Dr. Subtelny was a consultant to the Clinical Center of the National Institutes of Health, United States Public Health Service and served four years on the Dental Study Section of The National Institutes of Health. He has lectured in many countries around the world before international, national, and local societies. He has also served the orthodontic profession as:

  • President of American Cleft Palate Association, 1964

  • President of the International Society of Craniofacial Biology, 1965

  • Director of the American Board of Orthodontics, 1969-1976

  • President of the American Board of Orthodontics, 1975-1976
