The General Dentistry
Programis comprised of two educational programs: the Advanced Education
in General Dentistry (AEGD) and
the General Practice Residency (GPR).
The AEGD Program is based at Eastman Dental Center and includes one-
and two-year programs. The emphasis of the one-year program is on
enhancing general dentistry clinical skills and knowledge in all
areas of dentistry including fixed and removable prosthodontics,
periodontology, esthetic dentistry, dental implantology, orthodontics,
endodontics, oral surgery and special care. A second year of training
is available for a limited number of residents completing the one-year
program. It emphasizes dental research and the further development
of dental skills. The two-year AEGD Program focuses on developing
research, teaching, and more advanced clinical skills.
Goals for the upcoming year:
- To
recruit residents with an interest in pursuing graduate degrees
and increase enrollment
in the MS, MPH and PhD programs
- To
further enhance research activities within the program
- To recruit
an additional faculty member
- To attract
funding for clinical research
- To publish
three papers
- To reduce
the financial pressure on enrolled residents and the Division
of General Dentistry
The
GPR Program is based both at Strong Memorial
Hospital (SMH) and Rochester General Hospital (RGH).
It
also has one- and two-year
programs. Both are focused on hospital dentistry and the
treatment
of medically compromised
patients. Rotations through anesthesiology and emergency
medicine are also included.
The second-year program encourages
resident involvement in research. Residents have
clinical care training
in pediatric
dentistry, periodontics,
prosthodontics, endodontics,
orthodontics, and oral surgery. Residents also treat
handicapped, chronically ill and aged
patients at Monroe
Community Hospital (MCH).
Goals for the upcoming year:
- Some of the biggest challenges for this next year lie within
my role as Ambulatory Dental Director
- Reinstate
the Management Team and work on some of the pressing issues at
the SMH site including faculty and staff morale, the
hospital budget and inventory issues, the OMFS service at SMH,
and access
to timely care issues
- Improve evaluation
of residents, faculty and staff to make the evaluations more
meaningful and more likely to lead to a positive
growth experience
for both the evaluators and those being evaluated, improving
consistently below threshold QA indicators, especially the taking
of vital signs
and obtaining consent and address rising dental laboratory
costs
- Continue to
collaborate on didactic and clinical activities between the component
programs (AEGD and GPR) in our division
Continue to foster collaborative relationships between
general dentistry and other EDD divisions
- Continue to
foster collaborative relationships between general dentistry
and other SMH
services
