Pediatric
Dentistry offers a two-year curriculum that
prepares graduates to be clinical specialists, to conduct research
and teach, or to combine these activities. Special areas of academic
interest and research include the management of dental problems in
children who have medically compromising situations and developmental
disabilities, as well as advanced training in orthodontic treatment
and limited diagnosis. Three residents are accepted each year.
Residents may
also apply to the University of Rochester's School of Medicine
and Dentistry or other local universities or
colleges
to combine course work and research requirements toward a master’s
or Ph.D. degree. Clinical training includes outpatient treatment
at the Eastman Dental Center, a referral site for practitioners in
Western New York, and hospital experience at Strong Memorial Hospital.
Program goals
for the upcoming year:
- Finish
RO3 data collection and statistical analyses; prepare manuscripts
for publication and abstracts for presentation to
AADR/IADR
- Initiate the
HRSA funded Clinical research that addresses the role of pediatricians
in diagnosing dental caries in babies and making
timely referrals to pediatric dentists for early intervention
- Prepare the
self study document for the 2004 CODA site visit
- Integrate
the pediatric dentists in the outreach programs into the teaching
faculty of the Division of Pediatric Dentistry so that
they are on the clinician/educator tract and not GFT
