About Us
Letter from the Director
The Wilmot Cancer Center's Office of Development exists to raise support and awareness for one of our region's unique health-care resources. The Wilmot Cancer Center has a 30-year history of excellence in patient care, research, education, and community outreach in central New York State. It strives to provide outstanding care for people with cancer by offering the latest and most effective therapies in a compassionate setting.
Recently, the University of Rochester Medical Center designated the Wilmot Cancer Center a major priority and has supported an aggressive expansion of its faculty, its clinical and science programs, its basic research laboratories, and its clinical inpatient and outpatient facilities.
Throughout its history, the Wilmot Cancer Center has been strengthened and supported by the thoughtful donors who believe in the important work conducted here. Dear Friends,
This is an exciting time at the Wilmot Cancer Center as we move forward in our strategic plan to expand cancer care and research, recruit 25 cancer specialists and researchers, and construct a new 163,000 square-foot building. This effort is supported by a $42.5 million comprehensive campaign that will change the future of cancer care in Rochester.
Why are we doing this?
- Each of us has been touched by cancer in some way.
- Our doctors, nurses, and staff are committed to providing the best care available to each person we see.
- Our scientists are driven to find better treatments and cures.
- Most importantly, our patients deserve it.
The creation of a premier cancer center is more than bricks and mortar. It’s about bringing the best and brightest minds together for outstanding care and research. To date, we have recruited 20 new faculty members to the Wilmot Cancer Center. I am extremely proud of the new recruits and their dedication to finding causes and new treatments for cancer. They have blended well with the excellent team here and have added a new level of energy to propel us all forward on our daily efforts to eradicate cancer.
Our research efforts continue to grow and lead to new discoveries. The development of a vaccine to prevent cervical cancer began right her at the University of Rochester. Our scientists found the critical component of the vaccine designed to prevent infection with the human papilloma virus, the leading cause of cervical cancer. This vaccine is now available world-wide and could save hundreds of thousands of lives every year.
Our vision has never been clearer: We say with confidence that we will take a leadership role in finding cures for cancer. We already are. Our motto “The Cure Starts Here” is not a slogan, it’s a promise.
Sincerely,

Richard I. Fisher, M.D.
