Toast to Your Health Wine Auction

The Toast to your Health Fine Wine Auction grossed more than $1 million to support the University of Rochester Medical Center’s James P. Wilmot Cancer Center comprehensive campaign to expand research and clinical care.

“It was an outstanding evening as the Rochester community came together to demonstrate their enthusiasm for the Medical Center’s efforts to build a top cancer program here,” says Medical Center CEO Bradford C. Berk, M.D., Ph.D.

The Nov. 16 event attracted 420 wine connoisseurs for an evening in Tuscany, courtesy of Wegmans Food Markets, which provided the location, elegant decorations and five-course meal. The evening, chaired by Rolla Huff, featured a spirited auction of rare vintages, exclusive wine adventures, and wonderful wine dinners, led by well known Napa Valley auctioneer David Reynolds.

Among the top auction lots were an exclusive trip to Burgundy, France, purchased by Jack and Lisa Baron for $28,000.They will be escorted by Sherwood Deutsch and Michael Misch to little-seen Burgundy wineries and private cellars, including most renowned estate in Burgundy: the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.

Steve and Diane Graham bid $21,000 for a Tuscany trip, donated by Constellation Brands, with a stay at Ruffino’ Montemasso Castle. And Melissa Rutherford raised her paddle with a $15,000 bid for a fashion week excursion in New York City, with runway shows featuring Carmen Marc Valvo designs and two exquisite gowns.

Rob Fisher of Fisher Vineyards in Napa Valley, Calif., attended and donated several vintages as well as an outstanding Wedding Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons dinner for 10, which garnered $12,000.

Bidders also donated $350,000 to support the addition of the Trilogy Image-Guided Radiation Therapy System – cutting-edge technology for high-dose, precision radiation treatment for cancerous tumors. This technology is more versatile and faster than any technology available to patients and oncologists today in Rochester and Upstate New York.

Hard Hat Party

On October 17, more than 150 supporters of the Wilmot Cancer Center and members of the University of Rochester Board of Trustees were among the first to view the new 163,000 square-foot Wilmot Cancer Center facility, currently under construction and scheduled to open for patients in June 2008. The Hard Hat Party featured tours of all four floors of the new building, with Cancer Center physicians, nurses and scientists and project managers from lead contractor The Pike Company stationed throughout to offer information. Tours highlighted patient care areas designed to offer patient-centered care in a private and comfortable setting and research laboratories devised to foster collaboration and quickly move findings from the bench to the bedside. Guests completed their evening with a reception and project update from Medical Center CEO Bradford C. Berk, M.D., Ph.D., Wilmot Cancer Center Director Richard I, Fisher, M.D., and campaign co-chairs Judy Wilmot Linehan and Jim Ryan, Jr.
