Sign Language Courses

In 2008, the Deaf Wellness Center launched the first in a planned series of American Sign Language courses geared toward the needs of staff at the University of Rochester Medical Center. The level 1 course, for beginners, focuses on the development of practical sign language skills. A level 2 course is planned for 2009. (These courses are not credit-bearing.) In addition to the content regarding ASL, our courses also provide instruction regarding Deaf culture, sociology, health and mental health care with deaf individuals, and effective work with sign language interpreters. The level 1 ASL course is offered in both the fall and spring. The course meets one day per week, during the lunch hour, and continues for 15 sessions. A textbook and all course readings are included in the tuition fee. University of Rochester employees may be eligible for 80% reimbursement of the enrollment fee when they successfully complete the course. Enrollment by persons who are not employees of the university is welcome.
