Group Psychotherapy

Several psychotherapy groups are also conducted at the DWC. These groups are all-deaf and are conducted in ASL by our sign-fluent therapists.

DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) helps with the following problems:

Emotional outbursts
Suicidal feelings
Poor coping skills
Impulsivity
Poor interpersonal skills
People who have lots of crises

DBT groups meet for 90 minute sessions for a period of 9 weeks. Participants complete daily homework as part of the group to help apply and strengthen new coping skills. There are two levels of DBT groups offered at the DWC: a low-functioning/low-language group and a high functioning/high-language group.

Sexual Abuse Survivors Group is a closed group for 4-6 women who have experienced sexual abuse either in childhood or adulthood. (New people cannot join a closed group once it has begun, until a new group is formed.) Group meetings last 90 minutes and continue for 8 - 12 weeks. A workbook is provided to assist in healing and skill building.

MRDD Group is for adults with Mental Retardation or Developmental Disabilities. It helps improve social skills and increase healthy coping skills.

Anger Management Group helps people reduce aggression and learn effective ways to cope with angry feelings. Participants are expected to complete homework as part of this 10 week group which meets for 60 minutes.
