Search committees must understand the position they are looking to fill and how it fits within the school’s mission. They must generate a consensus description of the qualifications for that position; identify potential candidates and evaluate those candidates through written material and interviews. Diversity should be an integral component of every search. The URMC faculty, students, trainees and patients include individuals from different social classes, abilities, races, ethnic groups and countries of origin. Search committees should seek candidates whose background, perspectives, education and research can contribute to our diverse URMC community. Each committee member should be prepared to use personal contacts to help identify potential applicants from backgrounds that are under-represented in medicine.
Committee chairs will be responsible for documentation that diversity considerations have been included in the search process and to sign off on the Search Committee Checklist to help the School of Medicine and Dentistry comply with LCME requirements.
