Content Outline
Parker Palmer's monograph serves as the launching point to explore the highly personal nature of (and courage required for) teaching. We will examine why uncertainty and doubt are considered central to three different perspectives on teaching and learning (Palmer 2007; Hall 2002; Langer 1997), and we will explore the importance of re-framing our beliefs about the nature of knowledge and of acknowledging and managing uncertainty as a way to improve our teaching. AS this group launches into a yearlong program of "faculty development workshops," we will discuss strategies to remain mindful about these truths, in order to enhance our own work in learning (improving our teaching, assessing, etc.) and in promoting really good learning for our students, residents and peers.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of the workshop, the participant will:
- Describe the sources and responses to uncertainty in clinical practice and learning, and implications for teaching.
- Consistently approach the work of medical education faculty development with an overarching aim of promoting mindful learning.
