Interviewing Tips
Do
- Ask whether applicant has questions about the materials in their packet including
- Resources for career development
- Family friendly policies and child-care availability
- Support for dual-career couples
- Programs for new faculty
- Inform candidates about availability of support for faculty diversity and offer appointment with Senior Associate Dean for Diversity
- Ask candidates whom they would like to meet during their visit. This is especially important at a second visit when applicants are trying to decide whether a community would be comfortable for them
- Include information about affinity groups and the greater Rochester area
- Ask open-ended questions that allow the applicant to do most of the talking and provide a better feel for the applicant’s interpersonal skills
Don’t
Ask questions that could be perceived as discriminatory such as:
- Age
- Country of origin or citizenship
- Religious background
- Race or ethnicity
- Marital status
- Whether applicant has plans to become pregnant or get married
- Whether individual has a disability
