Cardiology Division Conferences at SMH

All conference dates/locations are posted weekly (Friday for the coming week) on the Cardiology Unit intranet website.

Cardiology Grand Rounds Wednesday morning Grand Rounds are held immediately following Cath/EP Conference on the second Wednesday of each month. All fellows are required to attend all Grand rounds sessions held per year. The topics are left to the discretion of the presenter and may include research topics, review of a clinical problem, or a CPC format. Each month, 2nd Wednesday at 7:00 a.m.
Core Lecture The Core Lecture Series is structured to provide a core curriculum in cardiology, covering the most important aspects of broad topics. Faculty presenters give a talk followed by Q&A. Attendance is mandatory for first year fellows. 7:00 a.m., usually on Tuesday and Thursday mornings
Morning Report Cardiology Division faculty and fellows gather to review in-hospital patient activity for the previous weekend or interesting cases seen on service recently. The resident or fellow on-call will be responsible for presenting an interesting case at this meeting (preferably a weekend patient, but may be a recent admission). In addition, pertinent announcements are made at this time. Every Monday 8:00 a.m.
Noon Conference Topic varies each day of the week on a rotating schedule ACHD Conference: Various topics discussed throughout the year by faculty.
Board Review:
Fellows use different formats of reviewing board-related material in preparation for Cardiology Boards.
Division Chief Luncheon:
Every other month the Cardiology Division Chief has lunch with the fellows as an open forum for discussion.
ECC Conference presentation by Faculty: ECG review conference with alternating attending physicians.
ECG Conference presentation by fellows: Fellows are assigned dates throughout the training year for ECG Board-style review.
Heart Failure:
Local and invited speakers present heart failure topics.
Journal Club: For Journal Club, fellows rotate the responsibility for choosing a topic for discussion.
MRI Conference: A didactic MRI conference is held each month with Dr. Sabu Thomas and Dr. Angelo Pedulla, where MRI cases are reviewed with fellow.
Program Director Luncheon:
Quarterly the program holds a program-director meeting to discuss fellowship program events, educational components, changes in the program, etc.
Research Conference: Drs. Wojciech Zareba and Charles Lowenstein have a monthly conference with all the clinical fellows to discuss research opportunities, projects and the status of these.
Vascular Medicine Working Group: Various topics covered by either fellows or faculty.

Conference Type Subspecialty Conferences – Description Occurrence
Cath/EP Conference AND Monthly Combined Conferences Several of the most interesting cases from the week before will be presented. The fellow who performed the catheterization will be responsible for presenting the case along with the hemodynamic and angiographic data. Correlation with echocardiographic and nuclear cardiology studies will be performed. The focus of this conference is on the presentation of interesting findings as well as difficult and controversial management problems to engender discussion. Rotating with the Cath/EP Conference each month are: Monthly Cardiac and Vascular Conference which includes interesting vascular surgical cases in addition to cath cases, and a Monthly Cardiothoracic and Cardiology Joint Conference. 7:00 a.m., Wednesday mornings
Cath QA Conference Review of all complications will be undertaken to address management and possible preventive measures 7:30 amThird Thursday every month
Cardiovascular Research Institute, Aab CVRI Conferences are held weekly that focus on basic research material. 4:00 p.m. Wednesdays Aab CVRI Bailey Road
Electrophysiology A core curriculum conference is held weekly covering topics ranging from basic science to clinical electrophysiology. Conferences are presented by fellows, faculty and invited speakers.
Hereditary Arrhythmia Conference: Held jointly between the clinical EP division and Heart Research. Cases of hereditary arrhythmia with challenging diagnostic or management issues are discussed, incorporating genetic and clinical expertise from the groups.
EP Case Review Conference: Invasive electrophysiology cases or unusual implantable cases with challenging diagnostics or more novel therapeutic modalities are discussed.
EP Research Conference: New research ideas are presented, data collection/analysis are discussed and fellows/faculty present research results updates.

Pediatric Clinical Management Conference The Pediatric Cardiology team gathers to review upcoming surgical and catheterization patients. This is a formal, in-depth review of all existing data on a patient and discussion of management options. In addition, there is a review of cardiac catheterizations performed the previous week.
