Highland Hospital Emergency Department
The Highland Hospital emergency medicine rotation for PGY-2 (or PGY-3) is moderately busy, with 33,000 ED visits per year. One quarter to one third of the patients are referred by private physicians, and there is good backup from ED physicians and the staff subspecialty attendings. There is no overnight call. Each resident takes the 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. shift three to four times a week.
Pediatric Emergency Department
During their first and second years residents also rotate through the pediatric emergency department of a large hospital on the north side of the city. The Rochester General Hospital Pediatric Emergency Department sees over 25,000 visits per year and is opened a new facility in the Fall 2010. These very busy rotations provide a broad spectrum of emergency care ranging from acute trauma to the more mundane febrile infant.
