Chief Residents

Taylor Cox, M.D.

Samuel Ayo , MD

College: The University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Medical School: Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University

Taylor grew up in Corryton, TN and completed his undergraduate degree in Chemistry with a minor in Hispanic studies at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville- Go Vols! Prior to starting medical school, he spent a year working at a federally qualified health center in Chicago through AmeriCorps where he met his now fiancée, Michelle. He then attended the East Tennessee State University Quillen College of Medicine and participated in the rural primary care track. Taylor couples matched with Michelle, an OB/Gyn resident, here at URMC. He was a member of the internal medicine primary care track and intends to pursue a career as a general internist following his year as Chief Resident. Outside of work, you can find Taylor at a local coffee shop reading a book or in the kitchen trying new Vietnamese recipes.

Anima Ghimire, D.O.

Sara Giafagna, MD

College: University of Rochester

Medical School: Kansas City University of Osteopathic Medicine and Biosciences

Dr. Anima Ghimire calls many places home, but her origin story starts in Kathmandu, Nepal. She immigrated from Nepal in 2005, and since then has lived in Texas, California, Iowa, Wisconsin, and most recently calls Boise, Idaho her hometown. She attended the one and only University for Rochester for undergraduate studies with a B.S in Neuroscience and a B.A. in American History. She then attended Kansas City University of Osteopathic Medicine and Biosciences for medical school, and it is there she quickly became an avid fan of the Kansas City Chiefs (sorry, Buffalo Bills!).

She returned to U of R for residency with great enthusiasm, as she knew she loved the city and its rich history. From a training standpoint, she was drawn to the diversity of the patient population and the wide range of clinical presentations. Additionally, the program's emphasis an interdisciplinary approach to patient care was quite appealing and spans both the inpatient and outpatient setting. There is a strong sense of camaraderie among co-residents and the faculty members are readily available, encouraging open dialogue and active learning. Additionally, Dr. Ghimire’s interests in the field of rheumatology aligned with the program's emphasis on a balanced experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Through her longitudinal clinic experience, she was exposed to the challenges and rewards of managing chronic diseases, sparking her interest in a specialty that offers a similar balance of inpatient and outpatient care.

Outside of the hospital, Dr. Ghimire enjoys cooking, although she probably enjoys trying the dozens of restaurants in the Rochester area even more. She enjoys going on hikes, wine tasting in the Finger Lakes, and is an avid runner.

Piotr Karmilowicz, M.D.

Piotr Karmilowicz, M.D.

College: University at Buffalo

Medical School: Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Buffalo

Piotr was born in Poland and moved to the United States at the age of 14, settling in Buffalo, NY. He completed his undergraduate education at University at Buffalo, where he received a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences. He stayed on at University at Buffalo to earn his MD degree afterwards.

He couples matched at University of Rochester with his fiancé Hope Kile, who completed her Pediatric Residency at URMC and has also stayed on as a chief resident.  He was attracted to the program given its robust structure built to support education and wellness, tied in with incredible people and leadership! He is interested in medical education and point-of-care ultrasound, and he plans to pursue Cardiovascular Diseases fellowship after his chief year.

When not in the hospital Piotr loves spending his time with Hope and their dog Luna. He is a big fan of the Thousand Islands where he'd like to spend all of his summers by the water. Hope has been a great influence on him as she has been teaching him how to water ski and garden (which is why he calls her his better half).

Sarah Rusnak, M.D.

Sarah Rusnak, M.D.

College: SUNY Geneseo

Medical School: Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Buffalo

Sarah is a native of the southtowns outside of Buffalo, NY. She attended SUNY Geneseo for her undergraduate education where she majored in English Literature. While there, she worked as a writing tutor in the school's Writing Learning Center. After college, she moved back to Buffalo to attend medical school, before traveling back down the I-90 to do residency at the University of Rochester. Sarah couples matched here with her husband, who is also a graduate of the URMC Internal Medicine Residency program, and a current Palliative Care Fellow at URMC. She was drawn to the program because of the collaborative work environment among staff in all departments in the hospital and focus on resident education. She has really enjoyed her involvement in medical education and hopes to continue this in her future career endeavors. Her interests outside of medicine include hiking (currently trying to hike all 46 High Peaks in the Adirondacks), scuba diving, reading, and of course- watching Bills games.
