Registration

Matriculation

According to University regulation, a matriculated graduate student is one who has been admitted to a graduate degree program and has completed initial registration in that program. Once matriculated, a graduate student must maintain continuous enrollment by registering every semester and paying the required fee (if applicable) until all requirements for the degree are completed.

Registration

To register for courses, students meet with their advisor or program director to discuss program requirements, course offerings and their course selections for the semester.  The advisor/program director must approve the selection of courses as well as any subsequent changes made throughout the semester.

Students use the University’s online registration system to register for courses each semester.  Changes to registration are made via an add/drop form, which is available in your graduate coordinator’s office.

Detailed registration instructions for each semester are posted on this site. Deadlines and late fees are published in the  Academic Calendar. Late registration is accepted with the payment of a $150 late registration fee.

Students are expected to review their registration record to make sure it accurately reflects their course selection period. They also are expected to maintain current address and emergency contact information through online registration and with the Office for Graduate Education throughout their tenure in the Graduate School.

Students may be restricted from registration due to outstanding obligations. It is the responsibility of the student to resolve the situation directly with the UR office that placed the hold on the student’s account.

Transfer Credit

All transfer hours, whether taken at the University of Rochester or at another university, must be approved by the Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Education prior to matriculation.

Of the University's minimum required 30 credits for the master's degree, no more than 10 credit hours may be accepted as transfer credit for work previously taken at the University of Rochester or another university. All transfer credit, whether taken at the University of Rochester or at another university, must be approved by the Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Education prior to matriculation.

Requests for transfer credit must have the approval of the Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Education prior to matriculation.

Permission to take work at another institution for transfer credit after matriculation in a graduate program must be approved in advance by the Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Education.

Verification of Enrollment

Students that require verification of enrollment for health insurance or credit purposes must make the request via the Status Verification Request form. Enrollment is verified for one academic year at a time (e.g. September through August) and cannot be issued until formal matriculation occurs and thereafter, registration for each semester.

Loan Deferment Request Forms

The School of Medicine and Dentistry does not participate with the National Student Loan Clearinghouse. Students must submit to the Registrar a loan deferment request form from the specific lender. These forms are generally processed within 48 hours of receipt.
