Student Records

Rights

The University of Rochester complies fully with the provisions of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), 20 U.S.C. 1232g. Under FERPA, students have, with certain limited exceptions, the right to inspect and review their educational records and to request the amendment of their records to ensure that they are not inaccurate, misleading, or otherwise in violation of the student's privacy or other rights. FERPA further requires, again with certain limited exceptions, that the student's consent must be obtained before disclosing any personally identifiable information in the student's education records. Students who want further information about the University's student records policy may obtain copies of it from the Registrar. Students alleging failure to comply with FERPA have the right to file complaints with the U.S. Department of Education under its regulations (see 34 C.F.R. Part 99).

Currently enrolled students may request that directory information (name, campus address, home address, telephone number, date and place of birth, academic fields of study, current enrollment (full or part time), email address, dates of attendance, participation in recognized activities and sports, degrees and awards, weight and height of athletic team members, previous educational agencies or institutions attended, and other similar information) be withheld from disclosure by making a request, in writing, to the Office of the University Registrar, 312 Lattimore Hall. All requests made on or before August 30th will make it possible to have your directory information omitted from printed directories. Requests made after this date should still be forwarded since they will prevent your directory information from being released for any subsequent reasons. The University assumes that failure on the part of the student to specifically request the withholding of any or all categories of directory information indicates approval of disclosure.

Release of Information

The Offices for Graduate Education will release information from student records to employers, prospective employers, government officials, or any other person or agency outside of the University only upon the request by the student to the Graduate Registrar in writing or by submitting the request through the online verification form .

Students With Disabilities

The University of Rochester is committed to making its programs and services accessible to people with disabilities. To allow time for appropriate action to be taken, we urge students to notify the Offices for Graduate Education early of their needs. It is also important that students needing support services and/or auxiliary aids contact us to apply for assistance. Students with learning disabilities wishing accommodations need to provide appropriate documentation of their disability as determined by a licensed psychologist to the Director of Learning Assistance in 107 Lattimore Hall (phone 585-275-9049) prior to the beginning of classes. For further information, contact the local disability resources coordinator Linda Lipani.
