Quality Improvement (QI)

Several of Dr. Temkin-Greener’s activities provide the opportunity for training in quality improvement. First, she organizes and directs research seminars, involving multidisciplinary researchers, designed to expose Palliative Care Fellows to research methods and issues in end-of-life care and quality improvement. This is QI research training with strong partnerships between multidisciplinary researchers and frontline providers and policymakers in health care who actually implement quality improvement strategies.

Second, with funding from the Aetna Foundation, Dr. Temkin-Greener collaborates with Dr. Timothy Quill on the testing of early palliative care intervention with cancer and CHF patients receiving home health care services. Participation in this study will allow the predoctoral or postdoctoral fellows to experience the testing of a new and promising conceptual framework and method for quality improvementthat focuses on improving the validity and generalizability of strategies and findings.

Third, Dr. Temkin-Greener is the Associate Director for Palliative Care Research and Quality Improvement at Strong Memorial Hospital. In this capacity, she is involved with many QI activities with the palliative care interdisciplinary team. There are many opportunities for training with this team.

Finally, the RFA suggests that training and research conducted by students should focus on an array of topics including the identification of evidence, best practices policy, and their conversion into organizational standards.

Dr. Byung-Kwang Yoo is collaborating with Dr. Peter Szilagyi (PI) in Pediatrics on a current study funded by the CDC (“Universal Childhood Influenza Vaccination: Providers’ Perspective”) that is collecting primary data from clinics/practices to empirically identify a best practice setting/policy for delivering child flu vaccination.
