Geriatric Emergency Medicine Research
Goal / Description
The goal of this research area is to evaluate and improve the system of medical care for older adults with acute healthcare needs. There are many factors that limit these patients' access to safe, patient-centered, efficient, high-quality, acute care. These factors foster unneccessary ED use, adverse events in the ED for which older adults are particularly at-risk, and unnecessary medical costs. This research is particularly important due to the increasing number of older adults.
Ongoing Projects
Screening Older Adults in the Acute Care Setting
To develop and evaluate a program of EMS screening and ED interventions to help community-dwelling older adults with unmet needs.
Evaluating Telemedicine for Acute Illnesses in Assited Living Residencies
National, multi-center project to evaluate the effectiveness of the CDC trauma triage guidelines in determining pediatric trauma center need.
Geriatric Emergency Medical Services Use
To describe the epidemiology of the population of older adults presenting to the ED and provide preliminary information regarding the impact of an acute illness upon screening for depression and cognitive impairment.
