Richard Botelho, MD, is currently the Director of the Fellowship Training Program within the Family Medicine Department. With a Portuguese name and an English accent, you would not have guessed that Rick Botelho was born in Kansas City. With shoulder-length hair, he went to Nottingham Medical School (1972-77) and finished his vocational training in general practice in 1981. He came to the States in 1982 and worked at the Buffalo Residency Training Program before coming here in 1985. His academic responsibilities include Director of the Fellowship Training Program. Interest areas include motivating behavior change, facilitating online learning, conducting reflection groups for learning how to address challenging experiences in health care (Wednesday morning conferences with Jeff Harp), and writing grants. He also likes playing squash. Dr. Botelho has just published the second edition of his three books entitled, Motivational Practice: Promoting Healthy Habits and Self-care of Chronic Diseases (for health care practitioners), Motivate Healthy Habits: Stepping Stones to Lasting Change (for the general public), and My Healthy Habits Journal (a low literacy version of the mutual aid and self-help guidebook.
