Overview

Vince Silenzio, MD, MPH, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, then completed his medical and public health studies at UMDNJ and Rutgers University. He rejoined the faculty at UMDNJ for two years before becoming founding director of research and teaching programs in family medicine at Columbia University; and he still maintains an appointment in the Department of Sociomedical Sciences and the Program in Narrative Medicine there.

Dr. Silenzio's research interests include cross-cultural medicine and ethnomedical practices, especially of first nations and immigrant populations in the U.S. It also includes sexual minority health, focusing on the cultural diversity in same-sex sexual expression. He has been active at the national level in sexual minority health, including serving on the Board of the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association and as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Association’s journal.

He was a founding member of the Program in Sexuality and Health at Columbia. Dr. Silenzio has also been studying curricula in film studies and documentary production for medical students and residents, and maintains an active involvement in the Division of Medical Humanities at the U of R.

Dr. Silenzio and his partner moved to the University of Rochester after many years in Manhattan and Philadelphia. Not only have they found Rochester a great place to live, they have been pleasantly surprised to find that culture is alive and well here – especially in the area of film. In his spare time, when not catching classic films, Dr. Silenzio is taking advantage of all this new found access to nature, re-learning how to drive, and studying traditional Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) medical botany.
