Welcome to Rochester

An introduction to the city of Rochester

Simply put, Rochester is a delightfully small "big city," with many of the benefits and few of the disadvantages of an urban center. It boasts more money managers per capita than any American metropolis except New York City. It offers some of the most appealing and affordable housing in the country—not to mention an extensive and highly regarded parks system, and five nationally ranked high schools.

Born as a milltown on the Genesee River, boosted to boomtown status with the opening of the Erie Canal, and brought to the pinnacle of modernity and innovation by its entrepreneurial patriarch George Eastman, Rochester provides a richness and diversity of life that's hard to find outside of the country's largest cities. Its lively "knowledge economy" draws its strength from Eastman Kodak, Bausch & Lomb, Xerox, growing telecommunications, "biotech" and IT sectors and other technology-driven enterprises located here. It hosts the renowned Eastman School of Music, Rochester Institute of Technology, and the University of Rochester (of which URMC is a part)—named one of the "new Ivies" by Newsweek magazine.

Rochester, URMC, and You

As a community, Rochester consistently performs among the very best in charitable giving, community investment, unemployment, violent and property crime rates, recreation, education, housing, health care, and other quality-of-life measures. Whether you're single or married with children, Rochester is an ideal "home"—providing what you need, as well as what you like, as you fulfill your residency or fellowship requirements at URMC.

The Rochester Community
Rochester is a metropolitan area of just under one million people. The community is prosperous and stable, with an economy based largely on high tech industries and education. Quality of life is high in Rochester. Housing is relatively inexpensive, crime and urban blight are subdued, and the air quality is good.  There are many fine museums and restaurants; theater, music, and cultural opportunities are abundant. The surrounding countryside, including its waterways, are full of recreational possibilities and is easily accessible.

Highland Family Medicine practice is located a half block from Highland Hospital. Within walking distance are lovely parks and gardens, magnificent homes, working class neighborhoods, and project housing. Many residents and faculty live within walking distance of the practice. Everyone agrees that Rochester is a great place to live and raise a family!

Rochester has a four-season climate. Spring comes on the late side, but the city is renowned for its trees and flowers, especially the lilacs, which flower in a park adjacent to the hospital. Summers are not excessively hot and allow for a full range of summer activities.  Fall is one of the best times of the year, with sunny days and cool nights and magnificent foliage displays. Winter is snowy and not excessively cold with many diverse winter recreational opportunities.
