CODER Fax CODER Fax is a tool designed to help all coders of Perinatal Data System data abstract information in a uniform manner. Data collected is used at designated hospitals and within the community for quality assurance, program planning and research purposes. To be useful the data needs to be accurate and consistent. Each month, August to June, Coders receive a question from the New York State Perinatal Data System Work Booklet and a page or two of de-identified medical record material. Coders are asked to answer the question (found on the Fax-back sheet) based on the medical information included in the fax. When finished Coders fax their response back using the Fax-back sheet. These questions are generally easy to answer. All the people who do any amount of PDS coding at the hospitals in the Finger Lakes region are encouraged to participate.
