Thank you for your interest in graduate studies at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Our Ph.D. degree programs are currently being expanded under a new organization that enhances the interdepartmental and interdisciplinary nature of graduate studies in the biomedical sciences. The new organization brings our degree programs under one umbrella called Graduate Education in the Biomedical Sciences, referred to as GEBS.

Participating in GEBS are over 250 faculty organized into 7 major contemporary areas of the biomedical sciences. These groups, called Clusters, transcend traditional department and disciplinary boundaries, and the interest areas are listed on our main Graduate Education web site.

Because the Clusters are more flexible than traditional academic departments, graduate training is more effectively maintained at the leading edge of today's rapid advances in the biomedical sciences. The Cluster organization provides our graduate students with the best of two worlds: they are part of a unit that has a strong, yet dynamic, scientific focus, and students are able to explore research opportunities with the entire GEBS faculty. Students will be able to explore working with faculty in a wide range of departments, centers and programs including Biochemistry & Biophysics, Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Brain and Cognitive Sciences, Chemistry, Environmental Medicine, Genetics, Microbiology & Immunology, Neurobiology & Anatomy, Neuroscience, Oral Biology, Pathology, Pharmacology & Physiology, Toxicology, and many clinical departments. Thus, the GEBS organization is built on a foundation that promotes exposure, and improved access, to an expansive array of research opportunities.

The GEBS Clusters will serve as a route of entry to the Ph.D. programs in the School of Medicine and Dentistry. These programs can be viewed at our current Graduate Education web page. New Ph.D. programs are being developed as well. Ongoing Ph.D. programs include:   Anatomy, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Genetics, Microbiology & Immunology, Neuroscience, Pathology, Pharmacology, Physiology, and Toxicology. The School of Medicine and Dentistry also offers Ph.D. programs in Health Services Research & Policy and in Statistics and Masters programs in Dental Science, Marriage and Family Therapy, Medical Statistics, Microbiology and Public Health.
