Letter from the Director

Why are we doing this?
- Each of us has been touched by cancer in some way.
- Our doctors, nurses, and staff are committed to providing the best care available to each person we see.
- Our scientists are driven to find better treatments and cures.
- Most importantly, our patients
Dear Friends,
The James P. Wilmot Cancer Center is rapidly transforming into one of the top cancer centers in the nation.
As part of the University of Rochester Medical Center, the Wilmot Cancer Center has seen tremendous growth in recent years. We recently opened a wonderful new facility for outpatient care and research and have recruited a host of talented clinicians and scientists to advance our research engine. And now, we’re constructing three additional floors for inpatient care and additional research programs.
The evolution of this center is a critical part of the Medical Center’s plan for growth and excellence in clinical care, research, education and community service. A key element is growing our cancer care and research programs and providing a comforting, compassionate environment for our patients.
Much important work has been accomplished here. Life-saving discoveries were made and swiftly translated into better patient care. Patient services were expanded and delivery of care was enhanced.
The development of a vaccine to prevent cervical cancer began right here at the Medical Center. Our scientists found the critical component of the vaccine designed to prevent infection with the human papilloma virus, the leading cause of cervical cancer. This vaccine is now available world-wide and could save hundreds of thousands of lives every year.
And we’ve received one of just four prestigious National Cancer Institute Specialized Program of Research Excellence grants for lymphoma research. Our scientists are collaborating with colleagues across the country to develop new therapies and tactics for deconstructing these diseases.
Our dedicated physicians and scientists are also training the next generation of specialists who will continue to pursue cures to the benefit of Rochester, the nation, and the world.
The future for the Wilmot Cancer Center is bright and we are proud to partner with our community and supporters to continue the path of excellence that has been laid. We say with confidence that we will take a leadership role in finding cures for cancer. We already are. Our motto, “The Cure Starts Here,” is not a slogan, it’s a promise.
Sincerely,
Richard I. Fisher, M.D.
Director
