Air Pollution Study for Older Adults (55-70 yrs)

Basic Study Information

How will inhaled ozone affect heart and blood vessel function of older adults during exercise?
We are looking for healthy volunteers 55-70 years old, getting regular exercise, with no smoking in the past 5 years, and no more than 10 years of past cigarette smoking. The main purpose of this study is to find out how inhaled ozone will affect heart and blood vessel function of healthy older adults during exercise. Understanding the effects of ozone on heart function, circulation and the airways can help set a safe air pollution standard for ozone and find ways to protect older people who may be at greatest risk. The first visit is the screening visit, which generally lasts about 3 hours. The next visit is the training visit, which is expected to last about 2 hours. If you qualify for the study after the screening visit and the training visit, you will be scheduled for three study periods. Each study period is spread over 3 days and includes an overnight stay at a hotel. We will ask you to wear a small personal exposure monitor for the 3 days before each study period. There will be at least 2 weeks in between each study period.
