Research study of C. difficile vaccine for people at risk for C. difficile infection.

Basic Study Information

Will the study vaccine for C. difficile infection be safe and produce an immune response?
Volunteers must meet one of two criteria to participate, either: 1. Two hospital stays plus one course of antibiotics in the last 12 months, or 2. Have a planned surgery that will require a 72 hour hospital stay. Volunteers will be randomized (like the flip of a coin) to one of three groups. Groups 1 and 2 will have 4 study visits over 2 months and phone calls every 2 weeks for 3 years. The difference between the 2 groups will be the diary that they complete after vaccination. Group 3 will have 11 visits (5 in the first 2 months and then every 6 months for 3 years) and phone calls every 2 weeks for 3 years. The additional visits for group 3 will be to obtain additional blood samples.
