Director of Highland Bariatric Surgery Explains New Study on Gastric Bypass Vs. Gastric Banding
Rochester, N.Y., January 16, 2012 – A study published in the Archives of Surgery found Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is more effective than gastric banding in terms of more rapid, sustaining weight loss. William O'Malley, M.D., Director of Bariatric Surgery at Highland Hospital, explained the results on 13WHAM and YNN.
"That study confirms what we've seen in our practice," said Dr. O'Malley in the 13WHAM interview. "The gastric bypass is a superior weight loss for the average person but it is a more involved surgery."
Dr. O'Malley says some people chose gastric banding because it is less invasive. Ultimately, patients choose which surgery is right for them.
