For Nurses
Education
Well-known for high-quality care and innovative application of new treatments and procedures, Highland Hospital strongly supports education and advancement of our employees. We offer access to the most recent professional journals, ongoing educational opportunities, and tuition reimbursement for courses related to your field of work.
Online Educational Access
With Highland's 24/7 online educational technology, nurses can fit learning into their busy schedules. They can take online courses for mandatories, New York State infection control re-licensure, orientation topics, annual competencies, and other inservices. Award-winning Blackboard courseware is used to develop online content for flexible and convenient access to professional education.
CCTV Staff Education
The Closed Circuit TV system has both patient and staff education programming. Both have on-demand capability in addition to scheduled programming that provides nurses with opportunities to review the latest Clinical Grand Rounds, equipment inservices, physical assessment series, cultural competency topics, and a variety of other clinical topics that are videotaped and transferred to CCTV.
Interdisciplinary Clinical Grand Rounds
Highland's interdisciplinary clinical staff offers monthly Clinical Grand Rounds on topics that are current and pertinent to our clinical practitioners. The selected programs are presented by content experts and are chosen based on the needs of and requests by all clinical staff with oversight from the Interdisciplinary Education Committee. Contact hours are often available for attendees.
Inservice Classes
Nurses are able to maintain and develop their technical, interpersonal, and patient care skills through a variety of inservices offered by our own expert staff or visiting experts. Topics include new equipment, clinical updates, regulatory requirements, leadership, and other nurse-generated topics of interest. Inservices may be unit-specific or offered for all nursing staff at Highland.
Highland Foundation Scholarships
Beyond our generous tuition benefits, Highland Hospital awards scholarships to qualified Highland employees who are continuing their nursing education. These scholarships are offered by the Highland Foundation through the generous contributions of the family and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie and Marion Thompson, the Highland Hospital School of Nursing Alumni, the Highland Hospital Auxiliary, and the Highland Hospital Medical Staff. For more information and an application, please contact the Highland Hospital Office of Nurse Recruitment at (585) 341-8059.
Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support
Highland Hospital is an American Heart Association Training Center and offers on-site American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification classes that include adult, child, infant, and AED skills. The Basic Life Support classes are free for all Highland nursing staff. Re-certification is required every two years to ensure that every nurse is prepared to provide emergency care and management of patients.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support is also offered for a fee on-site for any member of the nursing staff who would like to take the course. Some units cover the fee as a unit requirement. Nurses have the option to attend a two-day instructor-led class, a self-directed online program with a scheduled mega-code demonstration, or a totally self-directed online class and simulator testing program.
