Programs for Newly Hired Nurses

Nursing Orientation

Highland offers the most comprehensive nursing orientation program in the area. Our personalized orientation program introduces both experienced nurses and new graduates to their clinical responsibilities and to the Highland culture. It combines classroom, online, and hands-on learning, as well as a mentored unit-based orientation with a preceptor.

Hospital Orientation

After two weeks of classroom sessions, you'll feel confident and well-equipped to begin your nursing career here with a clear understanding of our approach to evidence-based practice, documentation, advanced directives, use of the computer system, infection control. IV therapy, mock codes, diversity and your new employee benefits.

Unit Orientation

When starting on their units, new Highland nurses benefit from another six to eight weeks of unit-specific training. This training will be in the form of activities or classes tailored to the individual nurse's needs, and will cover a variety of unit-specific skills which may include working with preceptors, shadowing with respiratory therapy, specialized skills classes and PACU/OR shadowing for surgical nurses.

Orientation for Critical Care Nurses

Nurses specializing in critical care will recieve an integrated online Essentials of Critical Care Orientation (ECCO) program consisting of 9 critical care modules developed by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. in addition to the ECCO modules there is online learning with specific clinical experiences coordinated by the unit preceptor. The ECCO program is approved for 56 contact hours through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
