Our Facilities

Our Emergency Department has been known for compassionate, high-quality critical care for more than a century. To continue to provide these critical services to the Rochester community today, Highland Hospital is undertaking an expansion of its Emergency Department to meet growing demands.

The Emergency Department renovation project will be done in phases and will be completed by 2009. The current ED configuration will expand from 7,000 square feet to 17,751 square feet, and from 18 acute-care beds to 24. Key features of the renovated Emergency Department will include:

  • A central nursing station that allows for maximum visibility of patients, plus improved efficiency and traffic flow for staff
  • A new information system that enables bedside registration, and electronic patient tracking and documentation, so staff know the status of each patient at a glance
  • Trauma rooms that cater to the needs of the most seriously injured patients
  • State-of-the-art equipment, including all trauma rooms fully equipped with heart monitors
  • Gynecological rooms that cater to the care and privacy needs of women experiencing a gynecological emergency
  • A decontamination room, near the ambulance entrance, that provides care and safety for patients exposed to toxins or biohazards
  • A "fast track" treat-and-release area that serves patients with minor conditions, allowing them to be treated quickly and privately
  • A private family room that provides friends and loved ones of patients with the privacy and quiet they might need for grieving
