The Geriatric Fracture Center

The Geriatric Fracture Center at Highland Hospital is the first facility of its kind that's dedicated exclusively to the care of elderly patients who suffer fractures.

The Geriatric Fracture Center Difference

  • Geriatric fracture patients receive priority evaluation and are fast-tracked through our emergency department
  • Many patients from partner nursing homes and assisted living facilities can bypass the emergency department and be admitted directly to the Geriatric Fracture Center
  • Three dedicated operating rooms and a large inventory of hardware needed for the most complex of procedures allow us to do surgeries quickly, with most performed in less than 24 hours (including weekends)
  • Our surgeons use the newest techniques and most advanced implants available allowing us to:
    • Fix fractures that may not be repairable elsewhere
    • Dramatically reduce the chances that a fracture repair will fail
    • Get patients mobile more quickly
  • Surgeons and geriatricians co-manage care to better handle the unique underlying  medical needs of elderly patients resulting in fewer post-operative complications
  • We dedicate an entire unit and half of another to inpatient orthopaedic treatment, including 20 mostly private rooms and a specially designed physical rehabilitation room
  • Nurses, social workers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, physician assistants, nutritionists, and other members of the care team are specially trained to work with older adults
  • Our physicians are actively involved in teaching, research and clinical trials that are helping to advance and improve the standard of care for older people who suffer fractures
  • We're pioneering total quality management for geriatric fracture patient care. We continuously monitor each patient and look at every detail for opportunities to improve our process.
