Imagine getting treatment from a staff trained specifically to understand and care for women and their special needs. For our patients on East 5 (the dedicated inpatient unit for women), this is a reality. It's a unique atmosphere with a host of services created just for you.
The staff on East 5 is dedicated to making patients as comfortable as possible. And because we realize that a hospital stay can be a little scary and overwhelming, we make it a point to answer any questions you may have about your care here or as you plan for your discharge and return home.
Our Care Team
Your attending physician will play a major role in directing your care while you are here, however there are a number of other professionals and care staff who will be working together to ensure that you get the best possible care. Our team is made up of a medical team and nursing team, all dedicated to providing quality and compassionate care.
East 5 Nursing Team
- Nurses: There is always a RN assigned to your care on East 5. The nurse directs the East 5 unit staff to meet your care needs and works with your doctor team to take care of you. On each shift there is a nurse in charge of the East 5 team. Our staff consists of 98% R.N. and 2% L.P.N. staff.
- Patient Care Technicians (PCTs): PCTs are assistant personnel who also work under the direction of our shift charge nurse. Our PSA generally is available during the day time hours and works with the East 5 staff to maintain a clean care environment and to help provide transport and errand service for our unit.
- Business Associates (BAs): BAs are clerical/office support staff for our unit. The BAs can answer many questions about hospital services in addition to facilitating new orders.
- Department Manager: This person is responsible for the 24 hour operations of East 5 and the direction of the East 5 nursing team. The Department Manager on East 5, if not present, may be reached by pager. Please ask the Business Associate for assistance. In the absence of the manager, the charge nurse and/or Nursing Supervisor can address your concerns.
- Nursing Case Manager: This is a R.N. who works with the Social Worker, the nursing staff and medical staff and any appropriate outside agencies that may be required to help care for you once at home.
Special Services
There are many amenities on East 5 that will make you and your visitors more comfortable during your stay.
- Private Rooms: 15 of our 20 patient rooms are private accommodations. If a patient permits, one visitor over 18 years of age may stay overnight with their family member who is in a private room. We try our best to place patients in the room accommodation of choice, but on occasion we may not be able to satisfy the request due to the medical needs of other patients on the unit. The nursing staff will move you into the next available room on a first come, first serve basis.
Please refer to your Admission Information Packet regarding your responsibility for payment for private room accommodations.
- Waiting Room and Consult Room: In addition to a family waiting room, we have a consult room where families can discuss care and other concerns with social workers or medical staff in private. There is also a computer in this room that can be used by patients and families to access health care and hospital information.
- Hospice Service: Inpatient hospice service is available on East 5 for patients that require and desire this level of care. The social worker will coordinate this care with the medical staff.
- Kitchen: For your convenience there is a kitchen on East 5 where you can get drinks and snacks for patients. There is an ice and water dispenser, toaster, microwave, and refrigerator for your use.
Please note: Some patients may be on food or fluid restricted diets per doctor orders. Please make sure the nurse is aware of any food brought in to the unit, whether it is intended for a patient or visitor. By health care code laws, the nurses must label and date any food items brought in. We would like to suggest that if you do bring in food items, that the container be of a disposable type.
- Phone Service: There is a pay phone located near the East Wing (orange) elevators for visitor or patient use. Phone service is also available in the patient rooms. This service can be activated by dialing extension 1-6924.
