April 20, 2012

Dr. Lael Forbes
Highland Hospital, the region’s leading provider of bariatric (weight-loss) surgery, will host informational seminars on bariatric surgery in Batavia and Corning this May.
Lael Forbes, M.D., will host the first seminar at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 9 at the Clarion Hotel, 8250 Park Road, Batavia. William E. O’Malley, M.D., Chief of Bariatric Surgery, will host the second seminar at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 10 at the Radisson Hotel in Corning, 125 Denison Parkway East. The sessions are free, but registration is required at (585) 341-0366 or visit www.bariatricsurgery.urmc.edu.
Dr. O'Malley, Dr. Forbes and the bariatric surgical team at Highland have helped thousands of patients in the region achieve lasting weight loss through surgery. At each seminar, the surgeons will provide an overview of the different types of surgery, and a bariatric program coordinator will explain the surgical process and the integral role lifestyle and diet changes play in the process.

About 80 to 90 percent of bariatric surgery patients achieve successful weight loss. Bariatric surgery is an option for:
- Those who are at least 100 pounds overweight
- Have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more
- Or have a BMI of 35 or more and are experiencing obesity-related health conditions, such as high blood pressure or diabetes.
Highland performs more bariatric surgeries than any hospital in the region. It regularly offers free informational sessions in Rochester; the May events offer Western New York and Southern Tier residents a more convenient way to learn about bariatric surgery.
