Highland Celebrates Mother's Day with Free Mammograms

April 20, 2011

In honor of Mother’s Day, the Highland Breast Imaging Center is reminding women about the importance of annual breast cancer screenings. The Center, in conjunction with the Breast Cancer Coalition and the Cancer Services Program of Monroe County, will be offering free mammograms to women 40 and older who do not have insurance or whose insurance does not cover breast cancer screenings.

The event will be from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 14, at 500 Red Creek Drive, Suite 130.  Appointments are required and can be made by calling (585) 487-3300.

More than 600 women were diagnosed with breast cancer each year between 2004 and 2008 in Monroe County, according to the most recent statistics available from the New York State Health Department. Avice M. O’Connell, M.D., F.A.C.R., Director of the Breast Imaging Center, says early detection offers the best chance at survival of breast cancer and can prevent the need for more invasive, more aggressive medical treatment.

The Highland Breast Imaging Center has been offering free mammograms for the past seven years and has served close to a thousand women who may not have been screened otherwise.

At the Mother’s Day event, parking is free and refreshments will be provided. Women also get a free 10-minute massage following their mammograms. If a woman schedules an appointment with a friend or family member, she will receive a ‘buy one get one free’ certificate for lunch at Lorraine’s Food Factory.

Women who cannot make the screening are encouraged to schedule an appointment for a different day.
