Classes Teach How to Manage Diabetes through Holidays

Highland Hospital’s Diabetes HealthSource is offering classes to prepare people with diabetes for the upcoming holiday season. “Living with Diabetes” classes will run from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, Oct. 6, 13, 20 and 27in the Calihan Conference Room at Highland. The cost of the classes is covered by most insurers with one co-pay, and each participant can bring a support person. Parking is free. For more information or to register, call (585) 341-7066. “Managing diabetes during holiday travel and festivities can be a challenge, but it is possible with some planning and guidance,” said Sally Nordquist, RN, CDE, Diabetes HealthSource Program Coordinator.

Participants will learn how they can balance their diets but still enjoy traditional holiday meals. Certified Diabetes Educators also will be available to make recommendations on healthy food choices, physical activity and stress management. Guest speakers and experts in exercise, medications and emotions will help patients develop personalized plans for the holiday season and beyond. Nearly 26 million Americans – more than 8 percent of the U.S. population – are known to have diabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
