What Does This Procedure Look For/Show

Abdominal Aorta Ultrasound

This procedure assesses blood flow of the aorta in the belly. The aorta is the main artery in the body that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body.  The ultrasound looks for blockages within the vessel and also allows the size of the aorta to be measured to assesses for aneurysm (enlargement or widening of the aorta).

Carotid Ultrasound

This procedure assesses blood flow in the arteries in the neck. The carotid arteries supply blood flow to the brain. The ultrasound looks for blockage within the arteries and determines if these arteries need repair.

Lower Extremity Artery Ultrasound

This procedure assesses blood flow in the arteries in the legs to assess for any evidence of blockages in the arteries. The ultrasound looks for blockage within these arteries and measures blood flow to the muscles in the legs.

How Long Does This Procedure Take

  • The procedure takes about an hour. If you have a visit with a cardiologist after this test, plan on being with us about 90 minutes.


What Preparation is Required Prior To This Procedure

  • You can eat and drink normally prior to the procedure.
  • You may take all of your normal medications prior to the procedure.
  • You will be asked to remove your pants prior to this procedure.
  • We recommend urinating just prior to this procedure so that you are comfortable during the procedure.


Who Performs/Interprets This Procedure

  • This procedure is performed by a cardiac/vascular sonographer who is an ultrasound specialist in imaging the heart and peripheral vasculature.
  • The procedure is interpreted by a Cardiologist with advanced vascular ultrasound certification.
