"Sacred Contracts, Myth & Meaning" by Lori Farr

“Sacred Contracts, Myth and Meaning,” by award-winning Rochester photographer Lori Farr, is on display through August 31 in Edward G. Miner Library, University of Rochester Medical Center.

Spiritual events surrounding the death of Ms. Farr’s mother served as a catalyst for her current body of interpretive work. “This is a personal, spiritual journey for me, based upon a belief in a higher power,” says Ms. Farr.  “My intent is to connect to the spiritual dimension through the use of the photographic medium.”

Using dual time exposures, Ms. Farr conveys the mystical by photographing moving subjects. This serendipitous approach produces unique, supernatural imagery, captured directly on film, without digital manipulation. “It is not unlike the childhood experience of looking up to the sky and seeing objects in the clouds,” she states.

Additional inspiration comes from Caroline Myss and her book, “Sacred Contracts,” in which she writes about sacred contracts with God and their relationship to destiny and the soul. Ms. Farr interprets Myss’s idea of four primary archetypes as representing major life challenges and survival patterns.

Ms. Farr received her BS in Professional Photography from RIT and her MS in Visual Arts from Monash University, Australia. She worked in NYC and Rochester as a photographer's assistant before opening her own commercial advertising studio in 1986.
