"Images of Thailand"
Photographs by Charlene Emmanuel

"Images from Thailand," photographs by Charlene Emmanuel, a third-year medical student at the University of Rochester Medical Center, is on display through March 2007 in the Edward G. Miner Library.

Charlene captured the colorful images in 2005, while participating in an international health elective in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand.  Under the preceptorship of Susan Cohn, M.D., M.P.H., Associate Professor of Medicine, Infectious Disease Unit, Charlene designed and carried out a small qualitative HIV research project. Although investigating human behavior kept her busy most of the time, she still found opportunities to explore Thailand, with camera in hand.

Even before her sojourn, Charlene swears she loved spicy Thai food - a balanced blending of four flavors, sour, sweet, creamy and salty. (If asked, Charlene will readily list the names and locations of every Thai restaurant in the greater Rochester area!) Thailand's friendly people and colorful backdrop also have left a lasting impression.

A native of New York City, Charlene obtained her first digital camera for a photography class at Stuyvesant High School. Now, she finds it hard to imagine herself without one.  Charlene hopes to continue to travel and to gain a broader perspective on approaches to infectious diseases and their prevention.
