"On the Edge of Spring" Exhibit by Clare Mann
On April 4, the Miner Library Gallery opens an exhibit by award-winning Rochester artist, Clare Mann. Taking inspiration from walks in Mendon Ponds Park, Ms. Mann’s paintings are awash with the delicate, shifting colors of spring. “Early spring holds such beauty,” says Mann, “…the bridge between winter’s naked starkness and spring’s exuberant burst of greening and color; the graceful lines of winter’s branches and the hint of spring’s buds.”
After receiving her degree in biology, Ms. Mann studied art at Monroe Community College and the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, NY. The Little Theatre is one of the local venues to exhibit her work . Ms. Mann's awards include a grant from the Arts & Cultural Council of Greater Rochester, the Hopper Paper Award for design excellence, and the League for Innovation Art Award.
Ms. Mann engages in freelance artwork, including murals and illustrations, but also enjoys painting “for the pleasure of it.” She employs various media, including gouache, water color, colored pencil, acrylic, and pen.
Believing beauty is just waiting to be discovered, Ms. Mann draws “whatever stops me in my tracks. Usually it’s something simple and subtle like sticks lying randomly on the ground or shadows or reflections on a pond. These are like little bits of calligraphy and painting.”
“On the Edge of Spring” will be open through May 2, 2009.###
Ms. Mann works at one of our affiliated libraries, Williams Health Sciences Library at Highland Hospital, and is a resident of Brighton.
